From 3 to 4 March, HULS Gallery at Millenia Walk presents a Chinkin demonstration by Taya Shikki, a “nushiya”, also known as manufacturer, of Wajima lacquerware all the way from Wajima, Ishikawa Prefecture. Taya Shikki produces a range of lacquerware that boasts the beauty of intricate and detailed techniques, and has continued their legacy for over ten generations. Expressing their theme “Nushiya for Living”, they take on a wide variety of work ranging from product planning, manufacturing to repair work. The demonstration will showcase “Chinkin”, a decorative technique involving carving fine patterns into the surface of the lacquerware and filing the carved patterns with gold foil and pigment.
Lacquerware is widely used in our daily lives, however to be able to witness the making of it is an uncommon sight. HULS invites you to come and discover the process of Chinkin demonstrated by master artisans. We hope to see you there.
