Discover the mesmerizing world of Takao Togashi’s lacquer craftsmanship this Friday (17th May 2024) at HULS Gallery Duxton Hill. Born in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, Togashi seamlessly blends traditional lacquer techniques with Western-inspired designs, creating a unique and captivating aesthetic.
Experience the allure of Togashi’s Aizu Tamamushi-nuri, a technique that mimics the iridescent wings of the jewel beetle. Delight in the elegance of Shibuichi-nuri, featuring a metallic silver-to-black gradation, and the distinctive texture of Tetsusabi-nuri, reminiscent of cast iron.
Pushing the boundaries of lacquer art, Togashi introduces innovative textures such as a leather-like finish and Bekko-nuri, inspired by tortoiseshell. The exhibition will showcase a range of functional tableware and art pieces, demonstrating the seamless fusion of beauty and practicality in Togashi’s work that transcends cultural boundaries, harmoniously blending Eastern and Western influences.
