At the end of October, we will be having the pleasure of presenting the rich heritage and craftsmanship of Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln, one of the historic kilns of Mikawachi ware in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, at Takashimaya Basement 1.
With roots dating back to the Edo period, the kiln has been producing exquisite porcelain for generations, preserving traditional techniques and designs. Today, the 18th-generation head, Taiyo Nakazato, continues this legacy by combining the kiln’s historic craftsmanship with a contemporary vision.
A highlight of the kiln’s artistry is its distinctive Hirado chrysanthemum decoration, a delicate technique in which each petal is carefully carved by hand using a bamboo spatula. Recognized as an Intangible Cultural Property by Sasebo City and Nagasaki Prefecture, this unique decoration reflects the exceptional skill, patience and attention to detail of Mikawachi artisans.
As part of the event, we are delighted to welcome Taiyo Nakazato and Yukimi Nakazato for a series of live demonstrations on 22 and 23 October. Taking a place at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm on both days, each one-hour session offers guests a rare opportunity to witness the delicate craftsmanship behind these exceptional works and gain a deeper appreciation of the traditions that have shaped the kiln’s identity.
More than a showcase of porcelain, the event will be a celebration of heritage, artistry and continuity—an intimate encounter with a centuries-old craft and the artisans dedicated to carrying it forward. Through the thoughtful dialogue between tradition and contemporary expression, Hirado Kohsyo Danemon Kiln continues to preserve the enduring spirit of Mikawachi ware for generations to come.
