Mr. Akihiko Sugita was born in 1978. He was trained in Wajima, a prime lacquerware production area in the Ishikawa Prefecture, and became a lacquerware artisan. His works are characterised for the skilful expression of calm tones and atmosphere inspired by antiques. On the other hand, he combines the shaded hues of traditional lacquerware with modern forms to create comfortable living space. Mr. Sugita uses the kanshitsu technique for his works, where he lays linen over a wooden base, then applies the dry lacquer. This creates a unique sheen, pattern and texture, revealing the expressive depths of dark lacquer and achieving a high artistic standard.
