Originally a side-hustle for a low-ranking samurai, Cherry bark ware is now a symbol of tradition and craftsmanship in Kakunodate, Akita. Crafted from thin sheets of bark harvested from cherry trees and dried for two years, this art form not only honors the past but also ensures the sustainability of the trees, as they regenerate when less than one-third of their bark is harvested.
